Beard transplantation is the transplantation of hair taken from a part of the body to your jawline and where you want your beard to grow. While this may sound simple, it is a process that requires a lot of patience.
There are two main approaches to this technique:
Follicular unit extraction (FUE). This approach is done by extraction of all follicular units one at a time from the donor area. FUE is less painful, which may explain why it is a more common procedure.
Follicular unit transplantation (FUT). For this approach, a surgeon cuts a small strip of tissue from the back of the head and extracts hair follicles from that tissue.
A follicular unit is a small group consisting of several hair follicles that can exit through the skin from the same exit point.
Both procedures take 2,000 to 5,000 hair follicle grafts or more from the back of the head, usually at or slightly below your ears, and implant them into your face.
A graft is a transplanted hair follicle.
After Beard Transplantation
Tiny crusts may form around each newly transplanted hair follicle, but these should fall out within a few days. After about a week to 10 days, you can start shaving your new beard.
Warning: Your new beard hair may fall out after 2 or 3 weeks. That is normal, and new hair must grow to take its place.
